Step 1:

Hang the bosal so that you can work on it freely.

Step 2:

Lay the end of the mecate with the Turk’s-head knot and tassel   (not the leather popper) over the left side of the bosal.

Step 3:

Pass the mecate under both sides of the bosal and over the top so that the Turk’s-head knot hangs between them.

Step 4:

Wrap the mecate completely around both sides of the bosal one more time, and slide the coils against the heel knot.

Step 5:

Wrap the mecate one complete turn around the left side of the bosal.

Step 6:

You are now making the reins. Adjust the length of the rein loop to about 48” from the heel knot (this can be changed later). 

Step 7:

Wrap the mecate once around the right side of the bosal and then over the top of the left side.

Step 8:

Pass the mecate under both sides of the bosal and down through the middle (over the rein and between the two sides) of the bosal.

Step 9:

Slide the coils down toward the heel knot and tighten them around the bosal.
